Rkomi: From origins to stage name, all about the new music star
It is spelled Rkomi and pronounced by doubling the "r".
Mirko Martorana owes his stage name to that typically Milanese custom whereby you divide a word in two and put the second half first and then the first. He arrives at Sanremo 2022 on the strength of the success "Taxi Driver" or the best-selling album of 2021 in Italy, a truly super success that convinced Amadeus to want him in the competition with the song "Insuperabile"
From a Neapolitan family that immigrated to Milan, raised without a father figure in a council house along with his mother, sisters and grandmother, with little money in his pocket but a great desire for redemption at age 17 he dropped out of school to begin working in order to support an independence made up not only of ideals, but also and above all of the need to provide for himself as soon as he turned 18.
"Independence costs money" and the struggle to meet basic needs led him to change multiple jobs: bartender, bricklayer, dishwasher, and waiter served to fill the refrigerator but not to satisfy that craving for music that increasingly exploded inside him.
